Gelston Castle Estate
Gelston, Castle Douglas, Dumfries & Galloway
Gelston Castle Estate offers self catering accommodation situated in Gelston near Castle Douglas in Dumfries & Galloway.
Gelston Castle EstateFor 40 years we have provided some of the most popular holiday accommodation in South West Scotland. About 80% of guests come back again and again - some are now on the third generation! There's nowhere quite like Gelston Castle, but in particular we are unique for our Christmas and New Year packages: for Christmas we provide a proper tree, a smart wooden case full of decorations, a first class organic turkey, a bottle of Port or wine. For New Year there are fireworks and a piper, fine whisky specially bottled for Gelston Castle and a haggis or similar.
A key advantage of Gelston Castle is that families and friends can come on holiday together and yet each have their own house. There are four houses (various sizes up to 7 persons) in the historic cobbled stable courtyard of Gelston Castle, while for those who want total seclusion there's the romantic and luxurious Kirkmirren Cottage (sleeps 4) down a delightful lane through the estate. Pets are welcome at no extra charge and everything's included: heating, hot water, electricity, logs, linen & towels.
The AccommodationWe concentrate on the things that matter:
First class beds with deep pocket sprung mattresses and crisp cotton bedlinen properly lined curtains (and blackout blinds where needed).
Efficient central heating.
Proper quality crockery.
Cutlery and glassware.
Well equipped kitchens.
Bathrooms with big cast iron baths (not plastic!) as well as showers - so you can have a blast on a stormy day walking the Balcary Cliff top path on the coast and getting soaked and then have a hot soak in a full length bath.
The GroundsWe are surrounded by lovely grounds. Red squirrels, roe deer, very vocal owls can all be seen. current project is a major facelift for the walled garden. We are also working away steadily at ambitious plans for the grounds and planting rare trees, etc.
Outstanding Leisure FacilitiesWonderful large heated swimming pool (May to Sept) in a sheltered courtyard. Best quality deckchairs and sun loungers. All weather tennis court with state-of-the-art Elastosol surface. Giant chess and steam room are available. Popular rope swings in the woods. Covered bike racks and bikes for hire.
Visiting Gelston & Exploring Dumfries & GallowayRight at the midpoint of Dumfries & Galloway, one cannot be better placed to explore the region. Gelston is far from the madding crowd, yet only 3 miles from the civilised and thriving small market town of Castle Douglas. The town was founded by Sir William Douglas, who built Gelston Castle as his home in 1800 - you can hunt for an original windowpane in one of the courtyard houses where a gardener engraved his name in 1837.
The 4500 Acre EstateItís one of the prettiest in southern Scotland: hills, pasture, woodlands and the magical Solway coast. It stretches six miles from Gelston village to Almorness peninsula, a beautiful wild place where the unique gnarled Galloway oaks grow and naturalists count rare bugs and butterflies. At the end of the peninsula is one of the most idyllic beaches in Britain, looking out to deserted Hestan Island (you can walk there by a mussel-encrusted causeway at low tide) - a king of Scotland lived there in the 14th Century, hard to imagine now!
