Local Area

The village of Tolsta Chaolais (from the Norse, Tol's steading at the narrows) is the most beautiful village in the Long Island chain stretching from the Butt of Lewis in the north to Barra Head in the south. It is situated at East Loch Roag on the west coast of Lewis, 18 miles from the ferry port and town of Stornoway. For the outdoor enthusiast life does not get better than here. The walker, cyclist, surfer, fisherman, bird watcher, photographer and general tourist are catered for with facilities that make many other locations green with envy. Stornoway, the island's main commercial centre, has all the facilities that most people would need. These include a fine Arts Centre (An Lanntair), coffee shops, restaurants and hotels. There are many shops and businesses which offer a wide range of goods and services. Local smokehouses offer a fine selection of fish, including kippers and salmon. Local produce also includes fresh fish and shellfish.
