Mounsey End is a true woodland retreat, tucked away among the trees at the end of a bumpy lane and wrapped in climbing roses. Peaceful and secluded, it sits above a sweeping bend in the River Barle, offering commanding views across the valley as the river winds its way down from the heart of Exmoor. The cottage forms one end of Mounsey House, built in the early 1900s for country pursuits and enjoys complete privacy with no other houses in sight, where the quiet and stillness are deeply relaxing.
Inside, the cottage is well designed for comfortable living. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dual fuel cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher and opens into a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area with a sitting space centred around a snug wood-burning stove and mini hi-fi. A separate sitting room provides a TV, DVD player and writing desk, while the landing features a small library stocked with holiday reading, magazines and children’s books.
The accommodation sleeps four guests plus a cot-sized child if required. There is a generous double bedroom with a king-size bed and ample space for a cot, along with a second bedroom featuring two full-size single beds. The large bathroom includes a bath with shower, wash basin and WC, with an additional basin in the main bedroom and a further WC and basin located downstairs.
Practical facilities include a washer and dryer, an outdoor washing line and an indoor drying line in the bathroom. All linen and towels are provided. The cottage is supplied by its own spring water feeding reservoir tanks, so thoughtful water use during dry periods is appreciated.
Outside, there is ample parking for two cars and space for bicycles, with the path to the house automatically lit at night. A private garden with decked area and picnic table offers a perfect place to relax and the surrounding woodland is directly accessible from the house.
Heating and hot water are provided by electricity and solar hot water, all included in the price, alongside a highly efficient wood-burning stove with logs supplied. WiFi is available, though download speeds are modest and mobile reception around the house can be patchy depending on the provider, with stronger signals found further away.
Guests enjoy direct access to a 140-acre ancient woodland nature reserve below the cottage, with extensive walking routes, nearly two miles of riverbank, and a fascinating Iron Age hill fort to explore. Wildlife is abundant, ranging from red deer and otters to rare butterflies and buzzards and guests are warmly encouraged to share any sightings.
