VillageAskrigg is an attractive Wensleydale village in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National park. The village is well known as the picturesque location of the vet’s home in the TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Askrigg is situated in a delightful setting and features an attractive church, dating from the 13th Century, and an old cobbled central square and market cross. The village has two excellent pubs, which serve good food, and a general village store. A greater range of facilities can be found at Hawes, one of England’s highest market towns, which is six miles from Askrigg.
Surrounding AreaAskrigg is a fine walking centre, being an excellent base for enjoying the countryside of Wensleydale and the neighbouring dales of Arkengarthdale, Swaledale and Coverdale. The Pennine Way and the Dales cycle route both pass nearby. Local places to visit include Semerwater, Bolton Castle, Hardraw Force and The Buttertubs, along with the many attractive Dales villages, including Dent and Middleham – close to the ‘Forbidden Corner’ visitor attraction which is a delight for old and young alike. Historic local market towns include Hawes, Leyburn and Richmond, which has a lovely Georgian theatre among its many attractions. The famous Settle-Carlisle railway passes near to Hawes and is a wonderful way to enjoy the magnificent scenery in the area. In addition, the Wensleydale railway, with steam locomotives, continues to be developed as a local visitor attraction in the lower part of the dale.
