About Duntrune Castle

Situated at the narrows between deep water and a tidal loch, Duntrune was built to guard the glens of Kilmartin and Kilmichael from seafaring marauders. Always a stronghold in those days, it was never the scene of a major conflict, and is now accepted as the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland. The vaulted rooms on the ground floor date from the 12th Century, and the remainder of the keep from the 16th.

The estate and gardens are inland and have been the subject of great media interest with coverage from The Guardian, Observer, BBC, among others.

Guests can choose from one of four cottages on the estate, all of which have been tastefully decorated and furnished to a high standard. The cottages comprise of:

The Bothy – Full of traditional characteristics, it is a sensitive conversion of the original castle office. Sleeping two, it is perfect for couples and has a pretty courtyard area with wonderful castle & loch views.

Stag Cottage – A firm favourite with guests, due to its quirky and quaint interior. It has an open plan living space with large stove fire and was originally use for parties and shoot lunches. The cottage has a lovely private garden with patio area. Sleeps up to five people.

Castle Cottage – This picturesque cottage is bright and airy, providing a comfortable base for those who want to rest, relax and recuperate. A wonderful holiday home for family breaks away, as it is in a great location for exploring both coast and country. Sleeps up to five people.

Mother Brown’s Cottage – Sleeps up to 4 people, it is a cosy and homely place to stay for couples, friends and families. The original castle lodge is a very pretty cottage set just half a mile from the castle itself. Perfect for those who want share this magical place but retain a little privacy. Its windows were originally placed to spot approaching carriages coming up the castle drive, but today they serve to view the sun and wildlife of Loch Crinan from dawn until dusk.
