Country Ways Cottages
Umberleigh, Barnstaple, Devon
Country Ways are six holiday cottages in beautifully converted stone barns hidden away on a small Devon farm with lovely gardens and magnificent views. We offer weekend and midweek breaks as well as full weeks and there are off peak rates during the quieter times of the year. There are always special offers and late availability bargain breaks which can be found on the website.
The Warren is the largest of the six holiday cottages at Country Ways. It has its own walled garden, patio furniture and barbecue. When groups book more than one cottage, The Warren becomes the meeting place. We can also provide extra tables and chairs if everyone wants to eat in the same cottage.
This cottage has three bedrooms and will sleep up to 7 people (There is also a double sofa bed in the living room).
Upstairs there is a family room with a double bed and bunk beds and another bedroom with a king size bed and sofa. The views from this bedroom are superb. The family bathroom is also upstairs. The downstairs is open plan with a large lounge, kitchen and dining area and like the bedrooms has all the old beams exposed. The kitchen is very well equipped with a double oven, microwave, dishwasher, large fridge and freezer.
The third bedroom is downstairs and has a single bed with room for a fold out bed. This bedroom has its own sink and en suite toilet. There is also a sofa bed in the living room and we can provide an extra fold out bed for either the downstairs bedroom or the kingsize room upstairs. Although there are 9 bedspaces we suggest a maximum of 7 people in this cottage. 4 star self catering.
The Cuckoos Nest
The Cuckoo's Nest has a large open plan living room and kitchen upstairs and the bedrooms and bathroom downstairs.
There are 3 bedrooms - one with a king size bed, one with a double and one with 3' bunk beds. There is also a double sofa bed in the living room.
This self catering accommodation should have everything you need - well equipped kitchen, good quality television, video, DVD, cd player, Xbox, central heating etc. Satellite tv can also be booked if required. A fold out bed or cot can be provided if needed.
Orchard Cottage - Sleeps 6 This cottage is next door to The Stables. It is all on one floor with two bedrooms, open plan kitchen and living room. The dining room is a large conservatory and it has its own private garden. There are no steps and the doors are wide enough for wheelchairs.
One bedroom has a double and a single bed, the other has two single beds on the ground floor plus another up a ladder in the hayloft (not suitable for young children). There is also a double sofa bed in the living room or we can put a fold out single bed in the hayloft. Although there are 8 bedspaces we suggest a maximum of 6 people in this cottage.
The bathroom has handles near the basin and toilet and plenty of room for wheelchairs. However this cottage does not have a wheel in shower like The Stables. There is a normal bath with a showerhead.
This single storey accommodation, designed with the wheelchair user in mind, is also ideal for a family. There are two bedrooms, one with a king size bed and one with a Hayloft bed and a Single bed. The hayloft bed is only suitable for older children, but we can provide a fold out bed which can either be used on the ground floor or up on the hayloft next to the other bed. Large wheel in shower room.
It has everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay, a well equipped kitchen, good quality television, video/ dvd with freeview, cd player, central heating etc. Satellite tv, wifi and computer games can also be booked if required. A fold out bed, cot and high chair can be provided if needed.
The Den is next door to The Cuckoo's Nest and is very similar in style, the only difference being the size. It too has an open plan living room and kitchen upstairs but only one double bedroom, along with a large bathroom downstairs. There are also two sofas in the living area upstairs which open up to make single beds.
Like the Dray it is a lovely couples cottage but because it is a little larger it is also used by young families. There is room in the bedroom for a fold out bed and it is just possible to fit a cot in as well.
The Dray is always a favourite cottage with couples. It is very cute and cozy but still has a light and airy feel to it as it is all open plan. There is a stable door at the top of the slate steps and once inside the living area is upstairs and the bedroom and bathroom downstairs.
It has a 4 star self catering rating and therefore should have everything you need - well equipped kitchen, good quality television, video, cd player, central heating etc. Satellite can also be booked if required. A fold out bed or cot can be provided if needed.
At the bottom of the valley are 14 acres of private ancient woodland with paths running through it. Being ancient woodland it contains a wide variety of trees and an abundance of wildlife. Plenty of wild flowers too, wonderful bluebells in spring and wild garlic by the river. You can stick to the paths or be more adventurous and make your way down to the little river at the bottom. There are fixed barbecues, benches and picnic tables around the gardens.
We have the fitness equipment at one end of the Corn Barn and the table tennis table at the other. In between there is a lovely oak floor providing the space to work out to a fitness video or just do your stretching exercises. The gym equipment has to be for adults only for safety reasons but the table tennis is fun for all the family.
Away from the gardens and great fun for children and adults, the trampoline can take up to 30 stone in weight and is excellent exercise! There are also swings, climbing frame, a Play House and sand table for young children as well as seating and a barbecue. We offer daily Farm Club sessions when the children are encouraged to help us feed the animals. There is often the chance to collect the eggs and take the pygmy goats for a walk on leads, as well as groom the baby donkeys and miniature ponies. There are always lots of different friendly animals to stroke and cuddle including alpacas, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, sheep and reindeer!
At Country Ways we also offer bespoke weddings when the whole complex including all the cottages can be booked for a weekend or midweek break. The Corn Barn is a beautifully converted threshing barn which is a perfect venue for the ceremony and Reception for up to 90 guests, with absolutely stunning views across the North Devon countryside. We simply offer the location for the special occasion, the rest is up to the wedding couple, it can be the ultimate in country chic or a very simple relaxed family celebration.
Country Ways is lucky to be in a region with so much to do with Exmoor to the north and Dartmoor to the south. The beaches are also all very different with the lovely rocky coves and cliffs to the north and the long sandy surfing beaches to the west of us. There are also interesting wildlife beaches such as Crow Point.
