Gallery Mews Cottages are in the village of Thornthwaite, between Bassenthwaite Lake and Derwentwater in Cumbria. The tranquil location is set within spectacular scenery and commands views of the majestic peak of Skiddaw at the front and is set against Thornthwaite Forest at the rear.
Rowan Cottage - Sleeps 6The holiday accommodation includes a large living room (with folding double bed), kitchen with breakfast/dining area, two bedrooms (one with double and one with twin beds) and bathroom (with corner bath and electric shower).
Elm Cottage - Sleeps 2The living room has a magnificent arch entrance and patio overlooking the garden with views of Skiddaw. The accommodation includes a studio screened double bed and fitted wardrobes, lounge area, kitchen (with breakfast bar), shower room and separate toilet.
Birch Cottage - Sleeps 4This self catering cottage provides a comfortable L-shaped living room overlooking the garden with views of Skiddaw, two bedrooms (one with double bed and one with twin beds) kitchen and bathroom.
The Cloisters - Sleeps 6This Large cottage has excellent facilities including fully fitted kitchen with dishwasher and range cooker, utility room with washer and separate freezer. Separate dining room, large lounge with Inglenook fireplace, remote controlled gas fire, three bedrooms, One king sized and two twins. Downstairs shower room and upstairs bathroom with walk in shower and bath. Private garden with extensive views of Skiddaw.
Facilities/InformationEach self catering cottage is completely self-contained, fully furnished and equipped. The garden, shared between the cottages, is fully enclosed and overlooking Skiddaw. The owners are resident on site. Electric heating is provided together with an immersion heater, electric cooker, microwave, fridge and kettle. Pre-payment card meters are fitted in all cottages, cards are available at the gallery reception. Bed linen and towels are included in the cottage price. Digital televisions with DVD are provided in all cottages. Provisions can be obtained from nearby Keswick (3 miles) or our well-stocked local shop in Braithwaite (1 mile). Private car parking is available adjacent to the cottages.
Dogs are permitted by prior agreement with the owners (an extra charge of £10 per week will be made).
A deposit of 50% is payable on booking; the balance to be paid 28 days before arrival (we reserve the right to re-let the cottage if these conditions are not met).
All cottages provide ground floor access and accommodation suitable for less abled persons.
Local AreaThornthwaite Forest which spreads across the fells for miles around the Gallery Mews provides a freely accessible, warming treescape teeming with wildlife including red squirrels, deer, badgers and bird life, including the annual visit of our breeding Ospreys. There is an interpretive visitors centre, accessible from the village or from the nearby Whinlatter Pass, where there is a "Go Ape" adventure, mountain bike trail, childrens play and picnic areas, a shop and cafe, excellent hill trails, for walks or mountain biking and breath-taking views into the "Jaws of Borrowdale".
Bassenthwaite Lake, within easy walking distance of the cottages, provides a peaceful setting and offers excellent fishing and sailing facilities alongside a wildlife reserve. On the eastern shores are the splendid grounds of the historic MireHouse, home of the Spedding family.
Derwent Water Is known as the Queen of the English Lakes with its dramatic beauty, mysterious islands and a range of boating activities - motor launches, rowing and sailing boats and canoeing.
Thornthwaite, having ready access to the A66, makes an ideal centre for touring the northern and western fells and lakes, providing an easy holiday option for walkers and tourers alike.
Thornthwaite is on the Coast to Coast cycle route and you can enjoy many cycle rides or walks from here without needing to move your car. Yet Keswick with its many attractions, cafes, pubs and restaurants is just 5 minutes drive away, and Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth is about 15 minutes away.
Rates: £315 to £1250 per week depending on season & unit.
