Ancient Barn Holidays
Castle Cary, Somerset
Ancient Barn Holidays offer self catering holidays in rural Somerset. These holiday cottages are based in lovely countryside, less than two miles from Castle Cary. Our holiday homes are converted from a pair of ancient farm buildings.
The Ancient BarnThis medieval barn was almost certainly built in the 1300s. By the 1970s it had been converted into a milking parlour and then it became derelict. In 1995 it was converted to provide a very comfortable, unusual and very special holiday home.
The Old StablesThis substantial Grade II listed stable-block dates from the 17th century. It is built of the local golden-coloured stone and was converted in 2001-2 to provide a top quality holiday home. The stables are suitable for a guest requiring wheelchair access. There is a south / east facing garden and parking for two cars.
The Bee HouseSet in the owners’ garden – surrounded by nature is a small medieval bee house (where the bee skeps were kept in winter). This has been converted to provide an additional cosy bedroom (sleeps 1-2) that can be rented in conjunction with either The Ancient Barn or The Old Stables – both are close by.
Visiting Castle Cary & Exploring SomersetSouth Somerset is a very special place in an area of England that as yet has hardly been touched by tourism. The countryside is pretty, the pace of life is gentle and the local people are friendly and helpful. Many of our guests return again and again to this lovely part of the world.
Throughout the year Somerset has lots to offer. You can visit historic sites such as:
Glastonbury Abbey and Tor
Cadbury Camp (also known as Camelot -a hill fort made famous by King Arthur).
Ruined Castles and Abbeys.
Delightful country pubs offering delicious meals made from local produce.
National Trust houses and famous gardens.
Fascinating cities of Wells, Bath and Salisbury are also within easy reach.
For those who enjoy shopping, there are numerous antique and craft shops in the area and Clarks Shopping Village is a short drive away at Street.
