Blackadder Mains Cottage is a distinctive and spacious detached house located just 10 miles west of the historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Built in 1865 from dressed sandstone and featuring a decorative slate roof with arched upper windows, the property boasts uninterrupted views of the Cheviot Hills. Recognised for its unusual architectural features, the house has been carefully restored and tastefully decorated, with a full renovation carried out between 2021 and 2022. The upgrades include eco-friendly electric underfloor heating powered by a ground source borehole, a new electric three-oven Aga and a carpenter-made oak back door and French windows. Reclaimed beech flooring has been laid throughout, with limestone flagstones in the kitchen, utility, hall and WC. The house has also been fully rewired and replumbed and decorated with vintage lighting and fittings. The roof has been replaced using reclaimed vintage slates.
On the ground floor, the spacious sitting room features a beamed ceiling, wood-burning stove, open fire, Smart TV and a Marshall Bluetooth speaker, with oak French doors leading to the garden. The kitchen is fitted with a solid beech carpenter-built design, wood and marble worktops, a copper sink and limestone flooring with underfloor heating. A three-oven electric Aga, Smeg fridge/freezer, integrated dishwasher, microwave and a large antique pine table complete the space. The utility room includes a teak drainer, Belfast sink and washing machine, while the WC features a vintage 1908 high-level cistern and antique sink with original taps. A solid ash staircase leads to the upper floor.
Upstairs, Bedroom 1 features an antique Victorian king-size bed and an ornamental fireplace. Bedroom 2 has an antique iron double bed and Bedroom 3 is furnished with both an antique 1885 double brass bed and a single brass bed, along with another ornamental fireplace. The bathroom includes a large vintage cast iron bath, a separate shower cubicle with power shower and vintage WC and washbasin.
Outside, the cottage sits within a half-acre garden with flower borders, a vegetable plot, and herbs. Guests also have access to a five-acre field just behind the garden, home to an apple orchard and surrounded by native hedgerows. There is ample private parking, oil central heating, and all electricity, logs, bed linen, kitchen and hand towels are included.
