The Black Swan
Potters Bar, Hertfordshire
South Mimms once had 22 inns! The Black Swan was one of these, then known as “The Prince’s Arms”. It was built around 1500, added to in 1600, and converted again in 1800, when the cottage next door was joined on, over the archway to the courtyard. Later it became the village shop and post office. The lintel to a door onto the courtyard states that we were then licensed “for the sale of tobacco and snuff”. The telephone exchange for the village was sited here and it is said that there were no secrets in South Mimms from the operator of the tiny exchange! Older inhabitants recall coming in from the outlying farms to make their calls. Part of the former shop was included in “Orlando’s Camping Holiday” by Kathleen Hale, who lived in nearby Rabley.
The base for your visitThe Black Swan offers you comfortable accommodation in a traditional cottage with a low beamed ceiling and windows onto the village green or in the converted Mission Hall. The M25 and A1(M) junction is just one mile away. Rail connections at Potters Bar (two miles) and the London Underground at Barnet or Cockfosters (each 4 miles) will take into central London in about 45 minutes. There can be few more rural places so close to London’s northern boundary. St Alban’s and Knebworth are a short drive away; Windsor, Oxford and Cambridge are reached in about an hour by car. Heathrow is 25 miles distant round the M25, or easily reached by buses from the village to local stations connecting with or on the Piccadilly line. There is a small shop at the garage ¼ mile down Blanche Lane and a Post Office and launderette on the edge of Potters Bar (1 ¼ miles).
Bed linen and towels are provided and each property contains television, books, games and tourist literature. The price includes gas and electricity and Wi-Fi. Off street parking is available in the courtyard. Children are welcome and a cot can be provided. Your pets can stay too! You may park in the courtyard at your own responsibility.
You are asked to arrive mid afternoon, and to leave by 10.00 a.m. so that each property can be prepared for the next in-coming guests. If this is not convenient, please let us know in advance, to discuss alternative arrangements. Please note that booking is from Saturday to Saturday only (you can arrive later or leave sooner).
