Visiting Buxton & Exploring DerbyshireThe centre of Buxton is approximately a mile away and is a pleasant walk, initially across fields or via Fern Road. There are footpaths from the door - up to Solomon's Temple on Grin Low, into Buxton itself, and also leading out in the opposite direction to open country. On London Road, approximately 500m from Fern Farm there is an excellent pub which offers snacks and meals and a mini Tesco shop.
Fern Farm is very well placed for anyone wanting to explore Buxton or the surrounding Peak District. The farm has 95 acres of land which stretches almost to the summit of nearby Grin Low, a beauty spot and country park which overlooks Buxton. This hill is topped by a 19th Century folly called 'Solomon's Temple', which has a great view of Buxton. At the foot of Grin Low, about half a mile from Fern Farm, there is Poole's Cavern - a spectacular show cave which is open all year round.
Buxton is a spa town with some magnificent buildings from its golden age - the 18th and 19th centuries. Among these is the famous Crescent - modelled on the one at Bath. Buxton also has an Opera House where there is an annual festival of Opera, plus an annual Gilbert and Sullivan Festival and a regular programme of shows. Behind the Opera House lies the Pavilion Gardens, 18 acres of parkland with a miniature train, a bandstand, boating lake and the Octagon, where antique fairs and other events are held.
The surrounding Peak District has numerous attractions, including stately homes, show caves, ancient monuments, magnificent scenery and some excellent walking, cycling and rock-climbing.
