There are many areas throughout the UK and Ireland which sometimes cover more than 1 county e.g. The Cotswolds. This section is here so that if you are looking for an area rather than a county then you will still be able to find something suitable for you. By reading below you can get more detailed information and find holiday cottages in that particular area you are looking for. When you use the search facility below it will bring up any cottages in the counties which the area covers so you will need to check to find out how close they are to the actual area you want.

The Cotswolds, Southern England

This area of stunning countryside and interesting places to visit covers several counties. They are - Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Warwickshire, Wiltshire & Worcestershire. The word ‘Cotswolds’ comes from 2 separate words - ‘cots’ the word for sheep shelters and ‘wolds’ which means rolling hills. This area is named this due to the sheep economy this area used to produce. Limestone is found in abundance in this area and many cottages and field walls in The Cotswolds have been built from this. The area offers the visitor much to see and do with everything from Stratford-upon-Avon - the birthplace of Shakespeare, the Avebury Rings in Wiltshire which is thought to date from 2500 BC to the many lovely walks around gardens including places such as Upton House near Banbury in Oxfordshire, Sudeley Castle and Batsford Arborteum near Moreton-in-Marsh.

The Highlands, Scotland

The Highlands is a large area of Scotland and this is the more common name rather than the olde style counties names which are now not used as much. The Highlands covers the following areas - Inverness-shire, Caithness, Skye, Mull, Argyll, Ross-shire, the Western Isles, the Orkneys, Nairnshire, Wester Ross and Sutherland. There is so much to see and do in this area and The Highlands really does cover a very wide expanse giving you a large choice of cottages and places to visit. There’s the famous Loch Ness in Inverness-shire where you can enjoy the breathtaking views plus try and find Nessie. Or theres the beautiful Western Isles (Hebrides) of the Isle of Lewis, the Isle of Harris, North Uist, St Kilda, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra - over 150 miles of beaches and plenty of wildlife to see. Argyll offers many places including Fort William and the Lochaber area with the Nevis Range including Ben Nevis and the mountainous Glencoe area. The Isle of Skye is the largest Inner Hebrides island which is renowned for its beauty and wildlife.

The New Forest, Southern England

The New Forest is actually an area in Hampshire but when searching for an area some people don’t know this! The New Forest gives ponies and cattle right of way so don’t be surprised to see one of the pretty Shetland ponies roaming about in the road in front of you! The New Forest was a medieval royal hunting ground favourite which was created by William the Conqueror in 1079. Deer were mainly hunted and these can still be found in abundance throughout the Forest. This area offers you plenty of lovely walks, bird watching and other wildlife spotting and horse riding.

The Lake District, North West England

The Lake District is Cumbria. As the name suggests there is a wealth of lakes and the area has many beautiful spots for you to holiday. Popular places to visit in this area include Keswick - a pretty market town in the heart of the lakes with lots of shops and good food, Ulverston - where you can go on a short cruise to Windermere -perhaps the best known of the lakes. Windermere itself where you can find the wonderful World of Beatrix Potter and much more.

Exmoor & Dartmoor National Parks, South West of England

These are located in the South West of England. The Exmoor National Park covers 267 square miles and can be found in Somerset and North Devon whilst Dartmoor National Park lies within the heart of Devon and covers 365 square miles. These areas offer outstanding natural beauty and wildlife and with both of these national parks you can find everything from granite tors, rolling hills, moorland and deep valleys.

Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales

The Brecon Beacons are 520 square miles stretching from Hay on Wye in the South East of Wales and bordering Herefordshire in England to Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire. The area includes many forests, moorland, waterfalls, caves and gorges and the mountainous area of The Black Mountains.

The Yorkshire Dales, North East of England

The Yorkshire Dales National Park stretches over 684 miles of Northern England. The Dales are mainly limestone and plenty of drystone walls made of limestone can be found in the area. Towns such as Wensleydale - famous for its cheese!, the market town of Settle, Skipton - the gateway to the Dales and Harrogate which is a spa town to the south east of the Dales.
