An Taigh Clach and 5 a

Carloway, Isle of Lewis, Western Isles

Sleeps 1-6
£1050 - £1450

Summary

Escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the calm tranquillity of the Western Isles with a stay at either of our two, family run properties.

These rural cottages are situated on the Atlantic west coast of the Isle of Lewis, in the crofting township of Carloway. Both have stunning views of the Uig and Harris hills to the south, Atlantic to the west and Carloway croft land on their doorstep. They offer excellent, pet friendly, self- catering accommodation and are ideally located for exploring the many sites of interest on Lewis and Harris. They are in close proximity to Dun Carloway Broch, Callanish Standing Stones, Garenin Blackhouse Village and the beautiful beaches at Dalmore and Dalbeg.

An Taigh Clach

‘An Taigh Clach’, Gaelic for ‘The Stone House’ was originally built as a traditional croft house in the early 1900’s and was used latterly as an agricultural barn. The renovated and extended property now has an open plan family living area and fully fitted kitchen to give maximum viewing exposure.

The cottage sleeps 4 with a double and twin bedroom. Whilst the bedrooms are not large, they are cosy and snuggled within the old stone walls. There is ample off-road parking, a fenced garden area and an adjacent utility shed for hanging wet weather/surfing gear, bicycle storage etc and external decking for you to relax and marvel at the many breath-taking sunsets and aurora borealis displays over the Atlantic.

5 a

5a was built in the early 1950’s when the original family moved from the traditional stone house (An Taigh Clach). Renovation of the two-storey property was completed in 2022 and consists of an open plan kitchen/dining area, lounge with multi fuel stove, family bathroom with bath and separate shower, master bedroom, utility room and WC all on the ground floor. A double and twin bedroom are located upstairs.

In the adjacent ‘Garage’ you will find an infra-red sauna, pool table, dart board, wide screen TV, fridge, and ample seating for those wishing to ‘chill’. Both the dining and lounge areas in the property have patio doors leading to the fenced garden where you will find a decked picnic/barbecue area and it is our intention (in 2023) to install an off grid / wood fired hot tub with an ample supply of logs for the duration of your stay.

Pets are very welcome at both properties; however, they should always be kept under control as we are in a crofting township where there may be free roaming livestock.

Visiting Carloway & Exploring Western Isles

This crofting township is surrounded by hill lochs teeming with wild Brown Trout. Salmon fishing is also available locally on the Carloway Angling Association waters of the River Carloway and the feeder lochs of Laxavat Ard and Laxavat Iorach – contact us if interested and we can arrange day or week permits.

There are many invigorating walks available locally and laminated maps are in your welcome pack giving start and finish locations and approximate walking times and distances. Surfing has grown enormously in popularity with enthusiasts coming from far and wide to ride the west coast waves but be advised there are seriously strong currents ripping past our local beaches of Dalmore and Dalbeg and surfing here is not for beginners and novices – please take care and exercise extreme caution.
