Visiting Scourie & Exploring Sutherland

Scourie is set in one of the most beautiful areas in Scotland. The grandeur of the mountains is offset by the beauty of the hundreds of lochs which dot the landscape. Permits for game fishing are available in the village. The area around Scourie is a paradise for naturalists, ornithologists and sightseers alike, for whom the magnificence of the scenery and wildlife causes them to return year after year.

Walkers of all types are well catered for, from easy walks around the village to more strenuous hill walking in the nearby mountains such as Ben Stack, Quiag, Suilven, Arkle and Stac Pollaidh. This area is particularly notable for its geology and for the remarkable landscape, which includes a waterfall which is four times higher than Niagara!

Boats sail several times a day to the island of Handa, both from the harbour at Scourie and from the nearby hamlet of Tarbet. Handa is owned by The Scottish Wildlife Trust and is home to many species including puffins, guillemots and skuas.

The area around Scourie is also home to birds of prey, such as buzzards, golden eagles, and, occasionally, sea eagles. Wildlife includes red deer, otters, sea otters, badgers and many other smaller mammals. Despite the northerly location, Scourie can also boast palm trees and even llamas amongst the sights waiting for the tourist!

Facilities at the harbour are available for anyone wishing to launch their own boat and Scourie Bay is suitable also for windsurfing and canoeing. The beach at Scourie is in the shape of a large crescent and the water is quite shallow and ideal for children to safely play there.
